Undergraduate Programs

You can earn a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Urban Forestry through 1 of 5 programs offered by the Faculty of Forestry. A specialization in Community and Aboriginal Forestry is available within the Forest and Resource Management Program. Registered Professional Forester and Registered Professional Biologist certifications are also obtainable through select degree programs.

Forestry

The Bachelor of Science in Forestry program integrates science and technology to advance the understanding and practice of sustainable forest management. Gain a solid foundation in forestry and learn how to manage this renewable resource from planning to the operational aspects of extracting timber. This interdisciplinary degree covers biological, physical, and social sciences.

Forest Sciences

Students in this academically challenging program study the scientific principles related to forests, forest organisms, and the ecology of plants and animals. Using this knowledge, students and graduates help us better understand aspects of our forests such as wildlife, fire, insects, diseases, soil, tree genetics, and forest regeneration. Students deal with questions such as: How do the plants and animals in forest ecosystems react to insects and disease, climate change, pollution, harvesting, and recreational use? And, How do we sustain the biological diversity of our forests while meeting our resource needs?

Natural Resources Conservation

The Natural Resources Conservation program is the Faculty of Forestry’s most popular degree program. This degree helps you play an active role in protecting and managing our natural environments, such as wildlife, forests, rivers, oceans and land. In addition to English, Math and science courses, take courses in areas such as conservation, wildlife, fisheries management, computer applications, remote sensing, and soil science.

Help fight climate change and protect the environment using the skills learned through this degree. By gaining an understanding of how to balance social, economic, cultural and aesthetic issues, this multidisciplinary degree will help you shape our future and our planet.

Urban Forestry

The Urban Forestry program is taught in collaboration with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. This program is for students interested in learning about urban ecology, sustainability planning, recreation, human well-being, and forest sciences and management.

Graduates learn important transferable skills in smart data, modelling and visualization, planning and design methods, community engagement and communications as well as policy, economics, and legal and professional practice.

Wood Products Processing

Students in Wood Products Processing gain a comprehensive understanding of wood science, business, and advanced manufacturing operations. After completing foundational courses in first year such as Math, Physics, and Chemistry, students move on to develop knowledge of wood and material science and to introduce primary and secondary wood processing technology.

In senior years students study the analysis and optimization of manufacturing operations. In their final year, students complete a major project that enables them to focus on an area of interest. Transferable skills such as problem-solving, communication, leadership, and teamwork are also developed. Students can choose to complement their science degree with a minor in Commerce.


Forest Bioeconomy Sciences & Technology (BEST)

The BEST degree program is the first of its kind in Canada to provide a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive education focused on the political, scientific, and economic challenges facing the growing bioeconomy and the increasing need to create a sustainable future.

Students will learn molecular, biological, and ecological approaches for utilizing renewable natural resources and how to measure the environmental impacts and ethical business practices while applying systems thinking and policy planning and implementation.
